The Fourth Summer School on Neuroinformatics, Neural Networks, and Neurocomputers was organized by FIST and the N3BG Consortium

The Faculty of Computer Systems and Technologies at the Technical University – Sofia, in partnership with the N3BG consortium, organized the 4th Summer School on Neuroinformatics, Neural Networks, and Neurocomputers. The event took place on May 21 at the UNITE Center and brought together academic lecturers and business leaders from Bulgaria, the EU, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, New Zealand, and the USA, both in person and online. The event was opened by the Dean of FCST, Prof. Rumen Trifonov. According to him, the summer school aims to provide theoretical and practical foundations of neuroinformatics, neural networks, and neurocomputers in their mutual integration, as dominant means of artificial intelligence. The revolution in the field of artificial intelligence is transforming the world, but its potential to benefit people has not yet been fully explored. Neuroinformatics, neural networks, and neurocomputers (N3) are at the very core of this revolution, stated Prof. Trifonov.

The fourth summer school of the N3BG consortium discussed how N3 methods and systems can help people of all ages improve their cognitive abilities and health. This includes the use of both generative AI, such as LLMs, and predictive AI systems, such as neuromorphic ones. If used correctly, the former can help improve human knowledge and understanding, while the latter can assist in the early prediction and prevention of mental and other health problems. Significant avant-garde topics were covered, including current achievements in neuroinformatics; achievements in neural networks and neurocomputers; brain-inspired computing; LLMs based on new neurocomputers (spike-based transformers); LLMs in education – from primary to tertiary and higher education for improved learning and cognitive skills; enhancing cognitive abilities in the elderly; AI in professional healthcare practice; predictive artificial intelligence for early prediction of health problems; N3 for personalized medicine; using speech for early brain diagnosis; using sound for treating mental health; artificial intelligence versus misinformation; ethics of AI use.

The N3BG (Neuroinformatics, Neural Networks, and Neurocomputers) consortium was established in 2022 by former TU-Sofia lecturer Prof. Nikola Kasabov, who was joined by scientists, lecturers, practitioners, and students from Bulgaria and abroad. Currently, N3BG has over 200 members. Prof. Kasabov welcomed the guests of the fourth edition and encouraged young scientists and researchers to actively participate in the summer school.

TU-Sofia hosted the first three summer schools in 2023, 2024, and 2025. The school provides an opportunity to expand the activities of the N3BG consortium for joint future work of universities, BAS, and business companies in Bulgaria and abroad, as well as for new European projects and training courses in higher and secondary education in Bulgaria.
