History and Development
The Faculty of Applied Mathematics and Informatics is the successor of the
Center for Applied Mathematics at Technical University of Sofia. Its origins can be traced back to the Department of Advanced Mathematics, which later turns into the
Center for Applied Mathematics and the
Institute of Applied Mathematics and Informatics.
Today, the Faculty of Applied Mathematics and Informatics is one of the main faculties at Technical University of Sofia and it has the following departments:
- Department of Mathematical Analysis and Differential Equations
- Department of Mathematical Modeling and Numerical Methods
- Department of Informatics
- Department of Applied Physics
- And the Scientific and Research Laboratory on Computer Graphics and Geo-Informatics Systems – software group ACSTRE.
Education
The faculty members of the Faculty of Applied Mathematics and Informatics prepare highly qualified experts in Applied Mathematics and Informatics, and teach Mathematics, across all faculties of TU-Sofia, in Bulgarian, English, German, and French.
The year 1970, at the so-called Building B, marks the beginning of specialized training for engineers with an interest in mathematics – with the establishment of the Center for Applied Mathematics.
Graduates of this training are hundreds of talented professionals – today leading educators, researchers, and executives in academic, financial, and industrial organizations in Bulgaria and abroad.
In 1999, building on the experience gained from Building B, a separate program is created – Applied Mathematics. In 2013, it becomes Applied Mathematics and Informatics.
Today, students are studying to obtain their Bachelor’s of Mathematics and Master’s of Mathematics degrees, while developing skills in analysis, modeling, and application of modern information technologies in industrial, technical, and economic processes.
Programs:
- Applied Mathematics and Informatics – The program prepares specialists with higher education, mathematical qualifications, and in-depth knowledge of computer science. Students master methods for analysis, development, and evaluation of mathematical models, as well as the application of information technologies in engineering and business contexts.
- Informatics and Software Science – The program is created in response to the ever-growing demand for experts in the field of information technology. The curriculum is in line with current national, European, and global standards and includes disciplines ranging from fundamental mathematics and informatics to software architectures and technologies.
- Applied Physics and Computer Modeling – This program focuses on the study of the physical nature of the processes underlying photonic, laser, electronic, and nano- technologies. The emphasis is on computer modeling and simulations, which replace costly physical experiments and provide insight into the properties of the examined systems. The curriculum includes engineering, linguistics, economics, and business disciplines – all necessary for a successful career in the industry. More information is available on the website of the Department of Applied Physics at Technical University of Sofia.
