Automotive Electronics

The specialization "Automotive Electronics" for the OQS (educational-qualificational degree) "Bachelor" combines theoretical foundation and applied orientation in the formation of knowledge and skills in the trained students. The curriculum aims to ensure quality training of specialists in a dynamic and innovative field, in sync with the needs of the labor market. In recent years, the automotive industry in Bulgaria has been developing at a rapid pace and already exceeds 10% of GDP. At the present moment, companies in this sector number more than 100, with the majority of them positioned in the "Automotive Electronics" sector. In the coming years, forecasts indicate that the need for engineering personnel in the "Electronics" profile will increase by at least 50 percent, with the greatest shortage of qualified engineers being precisely in the field of automotive electronics.The curriculum of the specialization "Automotive Electronics" is four years long, includes 240 ECTS credits for full-time study, and provides students with the necessary knowledge and skills to successfully solve a wide range of engineering tasks. An additional advantage of a graduate bachelor engineer in automotive electronics is the ability to easily adapt to a new or unfamiliar environment and join multidisciplinary scientific and development teams.The general theoretical preparation provides students with:fundamental knowledge and skills for designing, developing, modeling, analyzing, testing, integrating, implementing, and maintaining electronic modules and control systems – an element of the overall arrangement of modern cars;fundamental knowledge in the fields of electronics and electrical engineering, microelectronics and power electronics, mathematics, automotive engineering and types of engines, communication and navigation technologies, and others;knowledge of modern theories, best practices, methods, and tools, as well as leading achievements in the field of automotive construction – electric vehicles, hybrid vehicles, autonomous vehicles, eco-friendly vehicles, and others;proficiency in modern programming environments and programming languages, automated development tools and systems, modeling systems;knowledge of the main parameters and possibilities for synthesis and integration of specific sensors, sensor networks, and actuators into individual nodes and mechanisms of modern cars;knowledge of principles and control of functional modules, parameters, and environments - microclimate, durability, assistance, active protection, and others.The specialized training provides students with:the opportunity to participate in team projects aimed at specifying, designing, implementing, and documenting electronic modules and systems for integration into modern cars;knowledge and skills for designing, implementing, and maintaining electrical equipment - an element of next-generation infrastructure for the needs of electric vehicles.skills for synthesizing and implementing effective software solutions for the needs of a specific or broader application area;good knowledge of modern development environments (CAD/CAM), tools, and standards in automotive engineering;skills for assessing and managing risks in the development, implementation, and operation of new and improved hardware and software products in vehicles;skills and ways of thinking that imply creativity and quick reaction in accordance with the high rates of development of technologies in automotive engineering, as well as adaptability to the rapidly changing market environment.

Current labor market trends indicate a need for engineers who can apply multidisciplinary knowledge from fields such as:

electronic technologies,
microprocessor system engineering,
computer-aided design systems,
software engineering,
mathematics, etc.,

in high-tech manufacturing and in research and development. A typical example is the automotive industry, where rapid growth has been observed in recent years. According to a large-scale study by the Bulgarian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI), an increasing number of new automotive investors are emerging in Bulgaria, and the number of employed personnel in this new and rapidly developing industry in the country is continuously growing. Moreover, the majority of investments are concentrated in automotive electronics. An adequate response to this development is the preparation of competitive personnel who possess knowledge in areas such as:

electronics.
microelectronics,
micromechanics,
power supplies,
electronic regulators, sensors and actuators,
communication and information technologies.

In accordance with the needs of the labor market with trends towards the development of new, economical, ecological, autonomous and safe cars, and in step with modern specialties with similar focus in leading foreign universities, the Faculty of Electronic Engineering and Technologies at the Technical University - Sofia offers the specialty "Automotive Electronics" for obtaining the educational-qualifying degree "Bachelor Engineer".
The specialty "Automotive Electronics" is multidisciplinary and includes subjects from the fields of fundamental sciences, electronics, automotive engineering, mechanics, information and communication technologies, technical legislation and standardization, business management. The curriculum is flexible and allows students to cover a wide range of knowledge for the implementation of specialized electronic modules and systems for monitoring and controlling processes in modern cars - from design, through modeling, to testing of ready functional modules and their integration into a final product. Students have the opportunity to choose disciplines according to their interests and to improve themselves in the field of modeling, technologies or measurements of parameters of specialized hardware implementations.

Applications for study at the "Bachelor" educational and qualification level in the specialty "Automotive Electronics" at the Faculty of Electronic Engineering and Technologies (FEET) are processed through the general admission procedure at the Technical University – Sofia by submitting documents and participating in the ranking process.
Ranking is based on the results of the state maturity exam (matura) in mathematics or physics and/or a competitive exam. The competitive exam is in the form of a mathematics test.
Candidates who have successfully passed the competitive exam or hold valid results from state maturity exams (maturas), in accordance with the admission conditions, participate in the ranking.

The training in the specialty combines fundamental and specialized preparation, adapted to the interdisciplinary nature of the knowledge and skills required for the successful professional realization of future engineers. The fundamental preparation includes university-wide disciplines for the professional directions 5.2. "Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Automation" and 5.3. "Information and Communication Technologies" such as: mathematics, physics, materials science, software engineering, electrical measurements, theoretical electrical engineering, semiconductor devices, analog, digital and microprocessor circuitry.
The specialized preparation includes training in disciplines such as:
automotive engineering,

systems for control and management of vehicles,
sensors and actuators,
electronic regulators,
power converters for electric and hybrid vehicles,
specialized electronic modules and interfaces in vehicles,
microclimate control,
active and passive suspensions,
automotive industry standards, and others.

Covering such a wide range of knowledge implies the presence of serious infrastructure and staffing, which is within the capabilities of only a large scientific and research institution, such as the Technical University of Sofia.

Graduates with an educational and qualification degree of "Bachelor" receive a diploma of "Bachelor Engineer" in automotive electronics, and are prepared to work as:

developers, designers, system designers in the creation and implementation of new electronic modules and systems in the automotive industry;
specialists in testing, tuning, and maintenance of electronic systems and electronic infrastructure intended for the automotive industry;
analysts, quality control specialists, product consultants in research and development centers, branches, and sales offices of automobile manufacturers;
experts, consultants, etc. in state structures (ministries, agencies, departmental organizations) related to the operation and safety of road transport.
