About the project
With the increasing number of renewable energy sources, the growing interconnection of European grids, the development of local energy initiatives, and the specific requirements of Transmission System Operators (TSOs), the collaboration between Distribution System Operators (DSOs), as outlined in various network codes and guidelines, presents new challenges for TSOs and DSOs that will require greater coordination. The European Commission has adopted legislative proposals for the energy market that promote collaboration among network operators, as they provide balancing, congestion management, and ancillary services. These measures encourage the procurement of services at both the transmission and distribution levels, considering that this will enable more efficient and effective grid management, increase demand response levels, and enhance the capacity of renewable generation. TSOs and DSOs must already define the services they wish to obtain in collaboration with market participants and must establish ways to procure them in a coordinated manner.
Digitalization is a key driver for coordination and active system management in the electricity grid, enabling TSOs and DSOs to optimize the use of distributed resources and ensure cost-effective and secure electricity supply, while also allowing end-users to become active market participants, supporting self-generation and providing demand flexibility. To support this transformation, the INTERRFACE project will design, develop, and operate an integrated pan-European architecture for network services, which will act as an interface between the energy system (TSOs and DSOs) and customers, enabling seamless and coordinated operation of all stakeholders in the use and delivery of shared services. Modern digital tools based on blockchain and big data management will provide new opportunities for participation in the electricity market, thereby engaging customers in the proposed market structures designed to utilize distributed energy resources.
