Technical University of Sofia Secures Second Place in the Overall Ranking of Summer University

The team of Technical University of Sofia won second place in the overall ranking of the 24th edition of Summer University, organized by the National Assembly of Students’ Councils. The Minister of Education and Science, Prof. Georgi Valchev presented the second place trophy to TU-Sofia’s team. Prof. Lilyana Valcheva, Chairperson of the Higher Education and Science Union at the Confederation of Independent Trade Unions of Bulgaria (KNSB/CITUB), presented the trophy for largest delegation to the top three teams: Technical University of Sofia, University of National and World Economy, and Medical University – Pleven.

The winner in the overall ranking is the team of the National Sports Academy. The first-place award was presented by the President of the Republic of Bulgaria, Iliana Iotova. In her address to the students, the President emphasized the importance of the initiative in building a sense of belonging and teamwork. She noted that, after the end of the Summer University, the participants would leave not only with memories and new knowledge, but also as part of one large student team.

The Minister of Education and Science, Prof. Georgi Valchev, assured the participants that the initiative Summer University would continue to receive the support of the Ministry of Education and Science. He urged young people to be active, curious and engaged with the world around them, as opposed to be solely dependent on their screens. 

This year’s edition set a record for number of participants – more than 650 students and PhD candidates from over 35 higher education institutions took part in the athletic, educational and cultural initiatives. Angel Stoykov, Chairperson of the National Assembly of Students’ Councils, opened the event and thanked all the students, lecturers, guests, and partners who contributed to the implementation of the initiative.

The National Assembly of Students’ Councils has been organizing the Summer University since 2002, back when the initiative was under the name National Student Games. Its main objective is to promote active dialogue and interaction among student communities from different higher education institutions through training sessions, seminars, athletic and cultural events. The official awards ceremony was attended by Encho Keryazov, Minister of Youth and Sports; Diko Dikov, Regional Governor of Burgas; rectors of higher education institutions; Members of Parliament; lecturers; students; and local authorities representatives.

TU-Sofia’s participation in the Summer University initiative is yet another testament to the active engagement of the University’s students and their involvement not only in academia, but also in sports, teamwork, and student life.
