The largest robotics competition in Bulgaria - "Robotics Days '24 at TU-Sofia" returns on April 13, 2024. It will take place in the 7th academic term at the Technical University - Sofia, with a new look and new competition categories. The competition is an initiative of the Robotics Club at TU - Sofia and is held annually to encourage and motivate the development of robotics and innovation in the field of technology. The initiative includes an exhibition of technological developments and competitions aimed at students, schoolchildren, and people with interests in technical fields. Denis Ismetov, chairman of the Robotics Club at TU, Assoc. Prof. Vladimir Hristov - scientific-methodical head of the club, and Tsvetoslav Iliev - a second-year student at TU - Sofia, provided details on the topic.
The club began its existence more than 20 years ago as a small departmental club, after which it gradually grew and gained members. It then transitioned to a student council, thereby opening up to the entire university. Currently, many young people from different specialties are able to form teams and participate in various projects and hackathons. Its members are like a family; they help each other not only with organization but also with the academic process. Moreover, in recent years, people from other universities have also joined.
"This is a space where you can develop other skills, because until then I had only been involved with software, but later I started working on 3D modeling, electronics, and various other projects," shared Iliev.
According to Ismetov, the first edition after the COVID pandemic was held in 2023, and plans are in place for an edition in the following year, 2025.
"This is one of the events we are proud of in our organization because, besides being at the national level, it brings together thousands of enthusiasts from all over Bulgaria," he said.
Assoc. Prof. Vladimir Hristov pointed out that this year's competition includes several categories: "sumo", "line following", "puzzle", "3D maze", as well as "free style". Participant groups are distinguished by age, and new additions to the edition will be the "LEGO" and "rally race" disciplines, which will include autonomous and remote-controlled robots. Rounds last 3 minutes, with up to 4 robots participating in a series on the field. A large percentage of registered participants are from outside Sofia, and it is expected that over 200 people, along with about 50 mentors, will arrive. The number of registered developments in the edition exceeds 100.
"The idea is to bring these people together and introduce them to each other, because even now we observe collaborations from the previous year among those registered in the projects, which is actually a very good result, and we are extremely happy about it," said Ismetov.
This year, the competition is under the patronage of two ministries - the Ministry of Education and Science, as well as the Ministry of Innovation and Growth. The theme of the event is "Robo royal" and there will be awards for robots that most closely match the "royal" theme. The registration form can be filled out until April 13, which is also the date of the competition.
